Silurian chain-coral fossils
Silurian chain-coral fossils
Halysites sp. from the Louisville Limestone. Image viewed from top, with detail, and from the side. This is likely Halysites occidens, but silicification makes species identification uncertain. Specimen has been treated with acid to remove interstitial limestone. Collected from riprap in Clarksville, Indiana, and donated to KGS by Dan Phelps.

Silurian chain-coral fossils, Halysites occidens from the Louisville Limestone
Halysites occidens from the Louisville Limestone. Image viewed from top, and in detail, showing some of the thin interstitial coenenochyme tissues between corallites. Specimen has been treated with acid to remove interstitial limestone. Collected and loaned to KGS by R. Todd Hendricks.

Small mound of Quepora huronensis from the Louisville Limestone. Image viewed from top, side, and in detail. Note small, mostly circular and semicircular lacunae. Collected and loaned to KGS by R. Todd Hendricks.

Quepora louisvillensis from the Louisville Limestone.
Quepora louisvillensis from the Louisville Limestone. Image viewed from top, side, and in detail. Note larger corallites than the preceding specimen and circular lacunae with overall star shapes because of the larger corallites. Collected and loaned to KGS by R. Todd Hendricks.
